Joan C. Browning grew up on a small farm in rural Georgia. She went from picking two hundred pounds of cotton a day to volunteering with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She participated in the Paine College Steering Committee demonstrations in Augusta, Georgia, in April 1961, and with the Atlanta Student Movement sit ins in 1961-63 and was one of nine Albany Freedom Riders on the last Freedom Ride. Today Browning is a writer and lecturer who lives in a double wide mobile home on a hillside in West Virginia with her puppy Gabriel and cat Agape. Her writings have been published in the “Journal of Women’s History” and “Deep in Our Hearts: Nine White Women in the Freedom Movement” (University of Georgia Press, 2000). Browning writes and lectures about growing up four miles from one of the South’s most rabid racist politicians and about finding her way into the 1960’s civil rights movement in the Deep South.
